EMGC Working Test

Saturday 13th May saw me take the short trip up the road into Leicestershire for East Midland Gundog Club's first retriever working test of the year. Having been invited to sponsor EMGC and support their events for both field trials and working tests I am always keen to attend if I can, not only to show my support but also because I thoroughly enjoy watching the dogs and handlers at work.

There were around forty dogs running across three categories including Puppy, Novice Dog/Novice Handler and Veteran and after a warm welcome and a briefing from test secretary Lesley, the day was under way.

The weather kept fine and with some lovely ground at Hall Farm everyone appeared to be having a great time and the day was running like clock work. It was a bonus for me that I was able to help out in the form of a not so glamorous assistant to one of the judges and had the job of throwing dummies. It is a great position to be in as you are up close to the picking area and are able to observe the dogs working from an angle that you would not normally be seeing at the handling end of things.

There were some great dogs on show, young and old and the judges had reached their verdict by early afternoon. The day was concluded by a run off and after a short deliberation the winners were agreed upon. The presentation of prizes commenced shortly after everything wrapped up with a cup of coffee and sandwich.

This week we visited Lee and Victoria at the Breckmarsh Kennels to discuss our Christmas Plans.  While we were there we went out to look at Lee's latest litter of pups and I asked him how he starts the initial training with them. The Weekend That Saw The Trialling Community Come Together

The weekend that saw the trialling community come together. So the sad news has filtered down the grapevine over the last few weeks, Richard Preest a well thought of man who has been an asset to the trialling community for the last decade has had a severe stroke paralysing him from the neck down, leaving him unable to speak and in a very uncertain way in hospital. Starting his own line of Centrewalk cocker spaniels and reaching the heights of a championship win in 2016 Richard has had a lot of success with the cockers, namely FT Ch Centrewalk Daydream, Moonshell, Sweep and Piccolo. Richard hasn’t been shy in donating his time to judge trials and being an avid member of his local gundog club, Bristol and West Working Gundog Society, he is well liked among his peers. Now we all see each other’s post on social media, a like here and a like there, the odd comment but I’ve never seen everyone come together actually as a community for something.
